The very first Woody Guthrie tribute concert celebrates its 20th year!
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the very first hometown tribute for Woody Guthrie, which was held at the Crystal Theatre on the very stage Woody performed as a child. .
Larry Long lived and worked with the people of Okemah, OK, helping students to learn and write about their history. He then organized the tribute concert to celebrate Woody Guthrie and the people of Okemah.
The original tribute concert was the beginnings of Elders' Wisdom, Children's Song. To learn more about the original Woody Guthrie Tribute Concert or the 20 year reunion, you can visit the official website here.

Elders' Wisdom, Children's Song Around the World
Freedom, Oh Freedom was recorded by Larry Long and the children of rural Alabama to celebrate the life of Ezra Cunningham, one of the first people to register African Americans voters in the South.
Now a new film from the Marshall Islands is breathing new life into the song. "Ña Noniep" stars local schoolchildren, several of whom asked if "Freedom, Oh Freedom" could be included in the film. They recorded a wonderful version of the song, which you can listen to here.
For more about the movie and schoolchildren, you can read Larry Long's Journal entry talking about it here.
To learn more about Ezra Cunningham and to hear a recording of him speaking to schoolchildren about the importance of oral history, you can visit his biography here.
