Cashton Community Celebration on October 18th

September 29, 2017

Cashton, WI - 8th Grade Leadership will host a Cashton Community Celebration in honor of Mrs. Marian Sullivan Schwarz’s 104th Birthday at the Cashton Community Hall on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM.

Students from Cashton’s 8th Grade Leadership will be performing a song with and written by Larry Long in honor of Mrs. Marian Sullivan Schwarz, entitled “No One Can Keep a Good Woman Down.” Students will also be reciting select words shared by Mrs. Schwarz about her life. She will also be presented with a framed copy of the song lyrics and photo put together by her great grandson, Aiden Cook.

About Mrs. Marian Sullivan Schwarz:  Mrs. Marian Sullivan Schwarz grew up in Lyon’s Valley with her five sisters.  During that time she grew to be a strong woman full of moxey and hope.

In 1933, Marian received her first teaching job at Clements School in Portland, WI.  For over 40 years she worked in the field of education in either a teacher or principal role.  Her love of children and respect for the field has continued to this day.

While teaching, Marian raised four children, milked cows, took care of a home, and attended college to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.  Many challenges faced her along the way such as WWII, Women’s Rights, and the day-to-day doings of a mother and a wife.  Through it all she remained strong and driven.  That drive is evident to this day as she reaches a new milestone in her life.

The night will begin with a community dinner courtesy of Lyle and Kelly Schaller.  Larry Long and Tom Thibodeau, Distinguished Professor & Founder of the Servant Leadership Masters Program at Viterbo University, will lead guests in an uplifting message of unity and hope.

Cashton’s rich history will be celebrated with a “walk through history” courtesy of Mr. Mike Hansen.  Guests will explore a photographic journey as they step back in time through the archives of Mr. Hansen’s photographs and postcards.

Brian and the Mississippi Valley Dutchmen will also pay homage to our rich history of family bands and community celebrations. Brian started his own band in 1985. It started as a six-piece band. As the years passed by, many larger bands decreased to 3-4 piece bands. However, almost 30 years later, Brian is one of the few band leaders who still maintains a six-piece band. In Brian's words, “The credit would go to loyal side musicians who still love to be part of a big band.” The Mississippi Valley Dutchmen have secured one of the finest names in old time music, playing the traditional "Dutchmen Style" music.
