Sanford Middle School Presents Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song

Minneapolis, MN – Sanford Middle School will host a community celebration honoring four Sanford community elders at the Sanford Middle School auditorium on Tuesday, February 12th, 2013, 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM. The Elder Wisdom, Children’s Song™ community celebration is brought to you by Community Celebration of Place (501-C-3), Minneapolis Public Schools and the West Metro Education Program (WMEP).

Larry Long and Anthony Galloway, student program specialist for WMEP, has been working with Mavis Mantilla’s 7th grade students at Sanford Middle School to collectively write songs and gather recitations that honor the life stories of the following community elders:

• Pat Bellanger (Awaanakwe): Anishinabe Ojibwa. Co-Founder of the American Indian Movement and International Treaty Council.
• Mrs. Scott – African-American. Born in Waterloo, Iowa. Storyteller. Longtime resident of the Longfellow community of Minneapolis.
• Trevor Hausske – Norwegian-American. Minister. Civil Rights activist.
• Ruben Vazquez – Mexican-American. Director of Minneapolis Public School Community and Family Partnerships.

Community Celebration of Place is partnering with Little Free Library on Saturday, May 21, in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the first-ever Little Free Library Festival.

During 2017-2018, it is a primary program of Community Celebration of Place to transfer their collection into archives that will be open to the public for generations to come
